Peter Pan - The British Musical (Official site)
Has anyone seen this UK musical that started off in 1985? Does anyone know if the official cast recording CD has the entire play and not just the songs? Like The Phantom of the Opera cast regordings have?
Anyway, if you've seen or heard more of this, what do you think?
I've listened to some of the songs and they're pretty good although some have a bit maladroit lyrics, such as Hook's song "Goodbye Peter Pan" has its moments but it just gets too repeative and in non-rhyming way. But the music is however fine. My favourite song by far is the Peter/Wendy dueto Why? Pretty good song for them. The only complaint I have of it is the "Tell me why did you believe I'd grow up your way?" which sticks out to me as a little out of place. The meaning I understand and it fits but the "grow up" phrasing is out of place in this story concept. The same thing could've been said in a better way. But otherwise that song is very fine.
One thing I don't understand is why do the authrorized theatre versions always cast a girl or a woman to Peter's role (and some of the Lost Boys?) I know it was the way in the early 20th century but why even today when young boys are also allowed and in the business and surely would love to play this legendary part or in this legendary play? Like, if it was me producing, I'd rather tribute the actual character and not the old-fashion theatre ways. When the character is a little boy, I would NOT have a grown-up woman or a girl play the part if I actually had a choice!
But anyway, I'd like to see/hear this British adaptation because the songs make it sound nice and well...it's British as is the original story, while I generally like better British entertainment and adaptations of things, than American.
