Well for the first topic and as way to break the ice I'd thought I'd review the movie and talk about but what I loved and didn't love to much.
Well first of all I loved the acting, all the actors did an amazing job in there roles, esp. the three leads. Jason Issacs, Jeremy Sumpter and Rachel Hurd-Wood all nailed it as Hook, Pan and Wendy, so much so I couldn't imagine anyone else playing those roles. I also did love the first love romance bet. Peter and Wendy, I thought that Jeremy and Rachel had awesome romantic chemistry, its even more amazing when you think this was Rachel first major film role. I also got to give props to Issacs to playing both Hook and George Darling. You totally wouldn't think they were the same actor, but he pulls off both character brilliantly.
I especially love how his version of George is very likable, you see him as a man under a lot of pressure (and understandably so) but a man who very much loves his family. Unlike the Disney version where George is really unlikable to the point of being a near jerk ass. At least until the very end of the film where I guess he had such a good time at the party, it got the stick out of his butt. He did have that one moment with Nana, but you would think having three children would make him much more tolerate.
This film version of George was perfect, you liked him, you understood where he was coming from and you were happy when he finally grew a pair and listened to himself rather then Millicent.
Also I also love the addition of Aunt Millicent, she may be a new character, but she fit in perfectly. Believe me, I've seen stories try to fit in new characters and do a terrible job at it. Millicent makes more sense then The Darlings having a maid when their suppose to be having money problems. It's never stated who Millicent is related to, but given how she talks down to George, I'm almost certain she's his older sister. That and there's a closer resemblance bet. George and Millicent then bet. Mary and Millicent.
The music in this film is another thing that this movie did perfectly. I know a lot of people loved the music in Hook, but I think this one fit the movie it was with so much better. The magic, darkness and even sadness of the story was all captured perfectly.
I also I loved how this movie was a lot more faithful to the original source material. It got the atmosphere of the original story down pretty packed. Granted it wasn't completely perfect, I still don't read the book and think of cotton candy clouds, but I thought this movie had one of the best depictions of Neverland. Also the action was very good and very intense, well for most of the movie anyway, they dropped the ball in the final battle. But the first two fights were very intense, well handled and def. captured the mood that the movie was going for.
Now to the things that I didn't really care for so much. The first I'm pretty outspoken for, that being them no addressing Peter's mother issue. The movie drops a million different hints to it but never reveals it, instead trying to make everything involving Peter surrounding Wendy. I love Peter/Wendy but this was really pushing it. Usually when you do stuff like this its because your leads have no chemistry, Jeremy and Rachel had prefect chemistry.
Also when I add Peter's mother issue into the story, the character of Peter makes a lot more sense and becomes a bit more tragic. It's ironic since the movie makes Peter out to look tragic, but its not until I added the mother issue that he really became tragic in my eyes. Prior to that he just made me want to bag my head against a wall that he would still go back to Neverland after Wendy kisses him.
I actually wouldn't have minded if he only remembered his mother in bits and pieces throughout the movie. But then when Wendy kisses him, it unlocks the full memories of his past. Then maybe have one last scene bet. Peter and Wendy either in Kensington Gardens or his own now empty house, with bars still on the window.
Hell in the original story he does fly ahead everyone else and attempts to put bars on The Darlings window. The movie could have done a version of this, just with Peter revisiting his own past and Wendy appearing and finally giving him a shoulder to cry on. Man that would've been a gut wrenching moment. But then I have to wonder if they could still justify Peter going back to Neverland after something like this, its already hard to justify it after the kiss.
Another thing I was never to keen on was the final battle of the film. I'm not talking about when Hook is taunting Peter, that was actually fine for me. I was talking about before that when everyone is fighting on the ship. And that's the problem its a straight up fight against larger forces and no one is getting killed. The only way to win a fight like that is to kill your opponents.
I know that there kids and all, but I think Peter has enough combat experience to know that they have to actually kill the pirates. Hell its implied that they've killed the pirates before. Yet there's no killing in the final battle, beyond two pirates running each through. It seems that when they were doing the final battle, they were caught bet. making it a straight up fight, or making it something along the lines of Home Alone, where the kids often get the adults to conk themselves out and fall on objects. Which would have worked since they are kids, but would have completely changed the tone of the entire movie.
Hence why to me the final battle just looks really off, I mean I swear I could see pirates standing around doing nothing. Hell I think I even saw one jumping off the ship for no good reason. I'm still not sure why Smee was trying to jump ship so fast, at least in the book when the pirates are being killed it made sense, in the movie it makes Smee look like the biggest coward ever.
The whole thing makes me think of this scene here youtu.be/pfw-srBc4YI, jump ahead to 2:14 to see the moment I'm talking about.
But other then that I really love this movie. The acting is great, the music is awesome and fits the movie perfectly. And so that's my review of Peter Pan 2003, I think this should be a good ice breaker topic for the forum.
